A natural ruby is one of the rarest things you can wear — fine examples now command higher per-carat prices than diamond. Knowing how to spot a real, untreated ruby protects you from the synthetics, glass-fills and dyed substitutes that flood the market.
What a ruby actually isRuby is the red variety of corundum (aluminium oxide), coloured by trace chromium. The same mineral in any other colour is called sapphire — yes, "ruby" and "sapphire" are the same stone with different impurities. Hardness is 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, which is why ruby is one of the few coloured stones suitable for daily-wear engagement rings.
The most coveted colour is "pigeon's blood" — a vivid pure red with a slight blue undertone, traditionally from Burma's Mogok valley. Mozambique, Madagascar and Thailand also produce significant gem-grade rubies.
Five visual tests anyone can do- Look for natural inclusions under 10× magnification. Real rubies almost always show "silk" — fine needles of rutile crystal that scatter light. Glass-clean perfection at the budget level is a red flag for synthetic or glass-filled stones.
- Check the colour saturation in two lights. Move the stone from daylight to incandescent light. Natural rubies hold their red beautifully; many synthetics shift toward orange or pink under warm light.
- Examine the colour zoning. Rotate the stone — natural rubies often show subtle zones of slightly different colour. A perfectly uniform stone may be lab-grown.
- Test the hardness lightly. A ruby will not scratch a quartz surface (hardness 7); softer red stones (red garnet, spinel) may.
- Look at the back through magnification. Glass-filled rubies show characteristic gas bubbles and a "flash" of blue or orange where filler meets ruby. This is the most common fraud — disclosure of filling is required by law in many countries but is often skipped on grey-market stones.
For any ruby above 1 carat, insist on a current laboratory report from GIA, GRS, SSEF or Gübelin. The certificate confirms three things that no naked-eye test can:
- Natural vs. synthetic origin — analysed by spectroscopic and inclusion patterns.
- Country of origin — important for valuation: Burmese stones command 20–40% premiums.
- Treatment disclosure — heat treatment is industry-standard and accepted; lead-glass filling is heavily discounted; beryllium diffusion changes colour permanently.

- Always demand a current independent certificate for any ruby above 0.50 ct.
- Beware extreme bargains. A 2 ct "natural unheated Burmese ruby" priced like a small sapphire is almost certainly something else.
- Buy from established jewellers who will accept return on certification mismatch.
- Heat-treated rubies are real — but make sure pricing reflects the treatment.
- Lab-grown rubies are not "fake" — they are real ruby with a different origin. They should be disclosed and priced accordingly (typically 1–5% of natural prices).
Are heated rubies less valuable?
Yes, but only modestly compared to truly unheated stones. Heat treatment is universally accepted, stable and disclosed on certificates. Untreated stones command roughly 30–50% premiums in fine quality.
Can a ruby chip with daily wear?
Less easily than most coloured gems thanks to its 9 Mohs hardness, but corundum can still cleave on a hard impact. Set in a protective bezel for daily-wear rings.
Why is "pigeon's blood" so expensive?
The colour requires a specific chromium-to-iron ratio that occurs in very few deposits. Burmese Mogok rubies historically dominated the category; political and supply constraints make every fine stone increasingly rare.
